Athlete of the Week Simmons brings the heat for Harrisburg
Will Simmons will pitch at North Carolina in college baseball
HARRISBURG, S.D. (Dakota News Now) -Throwing a baseball hard has never been an issue for Will Simmons. “It’s just noticeably harder. I just felt like I’ve had an edge over the other guys for most of my life,” Harrisburg Junior Will Simmons says.
Maximizing that advantage was something Will began doing two years ago when he started working with former Sioux Falls Canary Kris Regas. “And it’s not just 90 (miles per hour). It’s 90 with some really late, arm-side action. So we’ve worked a lot with him over the past two years of really getting comfortable throwing inside,” Harrisburg Director of Player Development Kris Regas says.
With a fastball that was hitting 90 miles per hour, Will might have been one of the hardest throwers in the state.
But with his Harrisburg legion squad last year he might not have been the hardest thrower on his team when joined by Nebraska-bound Chase Mason. “This is something I think every trainer is trying to create is that good, competitive environment,” Regas says.
“He’s a great guy to look up to, for sure. He’s mentored me a little bit last year.” Simmons says.
The pushes from Regas and Mason, and the addition of a wipe out slider, have Simmons looking better than ever. The junior had an 18 strikeout no-hitter earlier this high school season, and committed to play college baseball at the University of North Carolina. “I kind of just threw my slider harder this year, last year it was a little more loopy. That’s my dream is to play that big time baseball,” Will says.
Where Will wouldn’t mind taking on a hard challenge in his former teammate Mason. “That would be awesome!” Simmons says.
“I want to see them both in the big leagues facing each other, hanging out with each other in an All-Star game. (So who wins that battle thought?) Pitching always has the advantage. Always has the advantage!” Regas says.
