Lacrosse continues to grow in Sioux Falls
The sport is becoming more popular with young athletes in Sioux Falls
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) -Alex Soundy, head coach says, “In May we went to the Sioux Fall Spark Lacrosse held their home tournament at the Sanford Sports Complex Jr Football Fields for varsity and 12U teams.
Gage Peterman says, “Once you get used to be able to know how to catch, you just have to know where it is and have hand and eye coordination.”
Alex Soundy says, “thats the biggest challenge is when people ask us what is lacrosse because it is a little newer to Midwest. It’s the fastest growing sport on two feet. it takes hand and eye coordination as well as athleticism. we compare it to soccer and hockey, a little bit of hybrid.”
“You guys got to work together and use that communication. "
Gage says, “You can catch the ball, shoot, pass.”
Fletcher Bosler says, “It’s a lot of team work. It’s very fast paced, so you have to be able to keep up, listen to your goalie and know what to do next.”
“Just keep it, keep that ball.”
Gage says, “It’s one of those sports that is different than most sports, like you are always trying to catch with your hands.”
Alex says, “For those, we just say come give it a shot. If they have never played, we have opportunities for every kid to learn to play. We have the equipment in our rec program for kids to pick it up. you don’t need a ton of money to give it a try and if it is something you like, we encourage you to give it a try our club teams and travel. its a family.”
Matthew Herrick says, “It’s really just getting people to come out and play it. I think a lot of people when they first play it, they have a lot of fun with it and it just keeps them coming back to it. I just fell in love with it and I think that happens to other people.”
Fletcher says, “Yeah I definitely think its been growing just because its so different than other sports. Some people want to see what it is like.”
Matthew says, “Oh it is a 100 percent growing. especially with the rec program with the Y. That’s been huge to grow. There is a bunch of kids signed up with that.”
Alex says, “Ultimately we would love to have it in every single high school in Sioux Falls and follow the same path that soccer did.”
Gage says, “If you just like being physical and being part of team, I would say lacrosse would be a sport for you. "
Landon Davis says, “If you guys want to run, and find a new sport to play, and be very aggressive come play lacrosse. One, two three, Sioux Falls. "
