RENNER, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - Legion diamonds throughout eastern South Dakota will be busy this week as the 40-team Dakota Classic begins tomorrow.

And there’s a good chance we could see several teams return in August for the Central Plains Regional in Sioux Falls.

Five states will be represented, including the 2019 Legion World Series Runner Up Fargo Post 2 and the 2017 runnerup Creighton Prep.

The World Series and regional tournaments will return this year after being cancelled by the pandemic last year, and Sioux FAlls will host the Central Plains Regional for the second consecutive time.

Renner is one of the co-hosts of this weekend’s Dakota Classic and they played in that regional the last time it was held two years ago. This weekend certainly provides a good measuring stick for a team that believes they can not only win a state title, but go even deeper than they did two years ago.

The tournament is split into 8 pools being hosted in Lennox, Humboldt, Renner, Brandon, Harrisburg and Sioux Falls. They’ll pair down to quarterfinal play on Sunday with the semifinals and championship on Monday at Augustana’s Ronken Field.
